Mushroom Lamp DIY in 3 Easy Steps

I am SURE you have been seeing this ‘Mushroom Lamp’ trending ALL over Pinterest and TikTok! It is such a beautiful home decor trend that fits with a lot of different styles, but buying it first hand is pretty expensive and quite honestly, as soon as I saw it, I knew it was DIY-able.

Examples pictured below:

Materials

  • 1 glass bowl (thrifted)

  • 1 straight cylindrical glass vase (thrifted)

  • lighting hardware & LED bulb (repurposed from a light bought at the thrift store)

  • Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover Paint + Primer

    • Shade - Rustic Orange

    • Finish - Satin

  • Metal wire

Step 1 - covering your surface

The best part of this trend is the smooth glass finish on all these lamps. To create this, I will be adding paint to the inside of the lamp to replicate the opaque colour while still giving the illusion of tinted glass. In order to do this, I need to mask off the outside of my glass, so with painter's tape and recycled paper I had thrown away, I covered up the outside of my bowl and vase.

Step 2 - painting

Now that everything is covered up, I am ready to paint the inside. I opted for a spray paint so that I could layer very light coats in order for it to have the smoothest finish possible (avoiding any paint streaks and splotches, especially when light shines through it). Ensuring that I am spraying from a good distance away and spraying extremely light coats, this will create the perfect finish desired for the look!

I chose to do a Satin Burnt Orange colour from Rust-oleum because it matches the some of the retro accents I have in my home, but Rust-oleum has so many different shades and finishes, so this is totally customizable to fit your space!

Step 3 - lighting

To create the actual lamp part of this DIY, I am repurposing the lighting wiring from a light I found at the thrift store. I used some thin metal wire to create a little canopy for the light to hang from the edge of the vase. Ensure that you are using an LED light, as it doesn’t emit heat and won’t affect the paint finish inside your lamp.

Final Results

Now all you have to do is place the bowl on top of the light and your lamp is complete!
